What AI project management tools actually do
Every project tool now claims to be "AI-powered." Some mean a chatbot that answers questions. A few mean AI that works on your real tasks: summarizing what changed, drafting updates, turning a meeting into action items, and flagging what needs attention. The difference matters.
Look for AI that sees your work
The useful kind of AI project assistant reads your actual project, tasks, and chat, then works on that material. It can list overdue tasks, summarize team activity, or draft a status update from what really happened. A generic chatbot cannot do that because it cannot see your project.
Check where the AI can act
Good tools let the AI not just answer but act: create a task, move a card, add a checklist item. With proper permission checks, that saves real time. If the AI can only talk, you are still doing the work.
Keep it in one workspace
Project management is most useful when it is connected to the rest of the work, the docs behind the project and the time spent on it. One workspace means the AI can connect a discussion to a task to a report without you moving anything.
